“Beyond the Bare Nanochannels: Exploring the Possibilities of Nanofluidics through Nano-in-Nano Integration”
Nanofluidics, the study and application of fluids in channels with nanometer-scale dimensions, is a potential solution to a variety of challenges in areas of separation, sensing, detection, and manipulation of single molecules. Despite the increased exciting progress in fundamental studies, the field of nanofuidics is still nascent and few applications have been demonstrated, in contrast to its thriving ‘brother’ microfluidics. One critical reason is that the methods for fluidic regulation, function integration, and molecular detection for nanofluidics are still lacking. These challenges have impeded the applications of nanofluidics. To conquer these challenges, recently we established a technology called as nano-in-nano integration, which makes it possible to fabricate fluidic, electrical, optical, thermal, magnetic, chemical and biological functional components in tiny nanofluidic channels. By using the technology, we have achieved the integration of a variety of components in nanofluidic channels for a wide range of applications. These functional components constructed in tiny nanofluidic channels allow the regulation of ultrasmall amounts of fluids at the femtoliter (10^-15 L) and attoliter (10^-18 L) scale, in situ probing of unusual effects of liquids confined in nanoscale spaces, single-molecule counting, and single-cell omics analysis with single-molecule sensitivity. In this talk, our recent progress in the development of nanofluidic applications utilizing the novel nano-in-nano integration technology will be presented.
Professor Yan Xu is the principal investigator of Nanofluidics Laboratory at Osaka Prefecture University (OPU). He received a bachelor’s degree in polymer chemistry from Dalian University of Technology in 2001 and a master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. From 2004 until 2007, he was awarded a Japanese Government Scholarship at the University of Tokyo (UT), where he finished his doctoral thesis work involved the synthesis of polymer-based biomaterials and their applications to microfluidic devices. In 2007, he received his PhD in Biomaterials from UT. He was the recipient 2007 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad from China Scholarship Council.
After graduate school, Prof. Xu was awarded a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship at UT, and in 2009, he became a research scientist of Department of Applied Chemistry at UT, where he studied cellular biochemical microfluidic systems. In 2011, he joined the faculty of OPU as a tenure-track faculty member in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Center, where he started his nanofluidics research group. In 2016, he moved to Department of Chemical Engineering of OPU as a tenured Associate Professor. He was the recipient of 2013 Young Innovator Award on Chemistry and Micro-Nano Systems from Society for Chemistry and Micro-Nano Systems, and 2013 Springer Silver Scholar Award from Springer.
Research in Professor Xu’s group is directed toward the use of nanofluidic devices for chemistry, biology, and energy. His research group continues to involve the study and development of novel nanofluidic methods for single cell omics, single molecule chemistry, biomaterials, and nanomedicine.
